A common dish at Chinese new year - Da pen cai (big bowl dish). It involves lots of different meats and some vegetables cooked in various ways, before being placed together in a large bowl and boiled gently in a soup base. Delicious!

Local making a food offering to one of the village gods. This was done outside the front door of the family home, on the single main road that runs through the village.

The return to the mainland of China. Words can’t describe how many people and cars there were in Sanya, China’s most southern and warmest city.

I was told that some of the trees in the rainforest of Hainan grow like leaves such as this, before maturing into winding branches that twist through other trees and over mountains.

A month of madness

I’ve just completed the CELTA course in Beijing. It was one of the toughest things i’ve ever done, but well worth it. I learnt a hell of a lot. Never again will I sleep so little, get so stressed and work so much. But I gained so much knowledge and made some great friends. A brilliant yet insane month.

Now to teach for the rest of my life!

The remains of a giant firecracker at the door of a village home. Used to scare off demons with their extremely loud noise. The red remains cover the floor in every occupied space in China for the 15 days of new year. The red scatterings are brought into the home and up the stairs on the feet of guests for good luck.

Walking through a forest in Baoting,Hainan, trees twisted up, around and over others to reach toward the sky. I was told these single twisting trees could stretch for miles over mountains.
